Thousands Welcome Home 4th Battalion, The Rifles
Soldiers of the 4th Battalion, The Rifles, paraded through Salisbury on Tuesday 11th December. The battalion, whose home base is Bulford Camp, had accepted an invitation from the Mayor Kevin Cardy to march through the city on Tuesday December 11, in a parade that started outside The Rifles Museum on Choristers Green in the Cathedral Close at 11.30am. The soldiers formed up at 10.30 and the Mayor inspected the troops at 10.45.
Both Wiltshire's Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff were invited to attend the event as guests of the Mayor together with eight other Lord Lieutenants and four High Sheriffs. After the parade a reception was held in the Guildhall for all those who took part.
Troops from 4 Rifles have been serving in Basra, Iraq since May this year and were nicked-named 'The Lions of Basra'.
The Regiment is the successor to the former The Devon and Dorset Regiment, The Light Infantry, Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment and The Royal Green Jackets and their predecessors. The Rifles (Berkshire and Wiltshire) Museum naturally now has a link with this battalion, given its local connection and that soldiers from both Berkshire and Wiltshire may serve in it.
We have over 60 photos of the parade and they are available from this museum for a small donation, so if you would like any please give us a ring.
