On the 4th August 2008 the daughters and other family members of Corporal George Waites, a First World War soldier of the Royal Berkshire Regiment, came to the museum and presented a number of photographs, a diary, War Medals and divisional commendation cards. He had served with distinction from 1915 to 1919 in both the 8th (Service) and the 1st Battalions. He was wounded twice and was a Lewis Gunner of some distinction. The family story was that after being wounded and recuperating in Ireland he moved heaven and earth to return to one of the Regiments front line battalions. Pictured in the Museum garden are his daughters Mary on the left and Ivy with some of the items donated. Mary said "We are really pleased to donate these to the museum where we know they will be kept forever"
