Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location Belgium, Not stated
Entry The S. Staffords were ordered to attack E across the ZONNEBEKE - BECELAERE road against point 27. The Battn was ordered to clear the woods on the Staffords right rear and cover their right flank. B Coy (under Capt Lucas) was detailed for this. As the company approached the NW corner of the wood just E of the 5th kilometre stone they came under rifle fire from the wood and the S of it and suffered some casualties. The company "cleared the wood" , and on reaching the S edge of the western half a line of German trenches were seen about 250yds to the front with a small farm building and enclosure on each flank. These enclosures were occupied successively by a platoon each and subsequently the line of trenches between, with the loss of a few casualties. A second line of trenches were now observed behind the first line, held in some strength by the Germans. B Company remained in occupation of the line they had reached and connected up with the Kings on their right rear. As a gap of some 400yds now existed between the companys left and the Staffords right, through dense wood, held only by a weak platoon, 1/2 A Coy was sent up at dusk to assist in closing this gap.
