Entry | Relief completed 2am. The Battn then relieved the 22nd R Fusiliers in the Right Subsection, completing by 3am. Night was very quiet. A very great deal of mining was in progress in this subsector on the part of the enemy and ourselves. Each company formed a dugout platoon in accordance with IV Corps [several words unreadable] At 10pm a mine was exploded by us on the right of the Battn front between the two craters MOMBER and LOVE. About ten minutes after the explosion a heavy bombing fight commenced in which the Germans were repulsed. Sec Lieut LANE was seriously wounded in the chest, head and arms by a bomb, Sec Lieut HANNAY was slightly wounded in the face and leg. The bombing continued until 11pm. Total casualties: 14. Remainder of night quiet. Contrary to their usual custom the enemy did not open any artillery fire when the mine was exploded, and afterwards fired only a very few rounds of "whizzbangs". It was popularly supposed at this time that the Germans had withdrawn most of their heavy guns to another part of the line. Weather better. |
