Regiment | 1st Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, BERTHONVAL SECTOR |
Entry | Battn relieved the 22nd Royal Fusiliers in left sub section. Relief complete about 1 am. A considerable amount of work had been done on the new line but it was by no means in a sound state for defensive purposes. Very little wire had been put out. Work was begun straight away and considerable progress made both in digging and wiring. Enemy artillery was not very active except against the communication trenches WORTLEY and CENTRAL AVENUE. Little or no M. Gun or rifle fire. Weather was fine. Orders re Telephones. Before going into the trenches this tour, orders were issued forbidding the use of telephones between front line companies and battalion HQrs except for conversations between officers and these were to be limited as far as possible. This order was framed on account of the German listening apparatus which apparently enabled them to hear both speech and buzzing. |
