Entry | The Battn proceeded to HERSIN by line of march. Parading at 9am we arrived at HERSIN 1PM and billeted in the orphanage. About 3pm the Germans commenced to shell the town causing considerable damage and several casualties. About half an hour after the bombardment had commenced we were warned that the enemy had turned on gas, but although the gas cloud could be observed from the high ground on the outskirts of the town no effects were felt. Hersin is from 4 to 5 miles from the present firing line. The shelling lasted about 2 hours ceasing at 5pm. The Brigade was ordered to be in readiness to move at 2 hours notice and at 9pm orders to stand to in readiness to embark on motor buses were issued. The Battn stood to on the alarm post outside the orphanage. The Commanding Officer appointed Captain West 2nd in command. |
