War Diary

1916-04-23
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, SOUCHEZ
Entry Weather fine. Day quiet until 5 pm when a machine gun commenced to traverse along HEADQUARTER TRENCH, also there was a fair amount of shelling with light field guns in same places as on the 22nd. About 11 pm the Right Front Coy was shelled with shrapnel resulting in 6 yards of trench being blown in. Working parties were employed as on previous nights. In the right front Coy the RE were working on a new drainage scheme. Also in the same part of the line the wire in front of the trenches was thin and we had men employed all this tour putting out trench [?] and barbed wire.
