War Diary

1916-03-11
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, SOUCHEZ RIGHT
Entry Nothing of importance occurred. The usual shelling with fizz bangs continued day and night. There was NO rifle fire. Although the situation in the sector was always more or less normal, it was extremely interesting from many points of view both on account of the proximity of the Germans to our front line and from the fact that one could observe for many miles the line of trenches of both sides. In our front line the enemy freely exposed himself at dusk and dawn and on many occasions endeavoured to open friendly conversations. We were not in a position to alter this state of affairs owing partly to the badly constructed parapets and partly to the fact that we were enfiladed (as were the enemy) from all sides. The wire in front of our own and enemy trenches were better than we ever had before.
