Regiment | 1st Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, SOUCHEZ RIGHT |
Entry | The enemy were very quiet indeed so far as rifle and MG fire was concerned. Artillery on both sides was fairly active. In this subsection the front line was held by 2 companies, 1 Coy in support and 1 in reserve. Communication with the front line and support coys was not possible in the daytime except by telephone. Also part of the reserve coy was isolated. At night fatigue parties had to go over the top, the communication trenches were waterlogged. This was a most interesting part of the line to hold. From certain parts of the line one could see the country for several miles. The town of LENS on our left front was wholly visible and the opposing lines of trenches around it were clearly distinguishable. On the other hand from a tactical point of view the position was not good, the front line ran in diverse directions towards the enemy and could be enfiladed from all sides, similarly we could of course enfilade the enemy. The regt on our left was the 23rd RF. On our right across the SOUCHEZ RIVER were the French (17th Divn French). |
