War Diary

1914-09-28
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, La Metz Fm Valley
Entry Weather fine. A good deal of activity observed on german position. See appd. FOLIO 22 attached - (no sketch). Slight shelling in afternoon. Sgt Adams wounded on patrol near No 2 bridge. Pte Dexter killed by stray bullet in No 13 trench. 2/Lts Suckling and Gregson-Ellis left Oeuilly on 26.9.14 reported sent to Fld ambulance. Cookers, supplies are regular. 11 Fld Coy RE putting up wire entanglements. Reference my message B8 of even date. There is more activity on the high ground now than has yet been observed. East of Braye there has been much digging all the mng. Double tiers of trenches are already visible in parts. It is evident that brushwood cover has been provided in many of the trenches this mng. West of Braye party carrying rations and straw up the face of the hill have been observed - I think his guns which were E of Braye Ch have been moved to A in Braye. There are six at least in that position. At the East end of the ridge by V of VILEUL de COURTECON men are to be seen out of their trenches in single file. Some go into trenches, other into wood below. The enclosed sketch [missing] shows roughly the principal features. [Signature unreadable] Adjt R/Berks Rgt. 28/9/14 4.20pm
