War Diary

1916-02-29
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, BARLIN
Entry About 3 pm a shell burst on the main road by Battn HQ and wounded 2 men. The Battn moved at dusk to the trenches, Coys marching at intervals of 15 mins. We reported to Brigade Hqrs in AIX NOULETTE (36 Brigade French) and found guides awaiting us. It was a long march from Pt SAINS to the trenches, and the roads extremely bad on account of the thaw and numerous shell holes. The leading Coy arrived at the new line about 9 pm the whole relief being completed by 10.45. The French Regiment from which we took over was the 77th. The trenches were on the whole bad and dug out accommodation scanty. Sanitary arrangements were non existent.
