War Diary

1916-01-22
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, C2 Subsector
Entry A similar working party to the one of the previous day reported at same times and carried on with the work in the Old British Line. 100 yards of parapet was built up and made bullet proof, and several yards of fire steps constructed. The Left and Right front Coys carried on with wiring and draining, they reported that parapets were all bullet proof and sufficiently high for protective purposes. During the night enemy snipers were quite active. About 7.30 am parties of Germans similar to those mentioned in this diary on 20th inst were again seen in the same place. The artillery fired but shots dropped short. Our left Coy heard the Germans working on their line during the night, also about 9 pm on the 21st three of the enemy were observed coming towards Island No 30 but on being fired on they at once retired. The Battalion was relieved by the 23rd Royal Fusiliers. Relief completed about 7 pm Coys marched independently to billets in LA TOURET. During the whole of our tour we only sustained one casualty, this was the man mentioned in remarks column (this page). He was shot through the head, but is reported doing well. The man was one of the reinforcements who joined on the 21st inst. 1 casualty, head wound.
