Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, C2 Subsector
Entry Quiet night. About 12 noon three enemy shells (4.2 How) burst in the Old British Line on right of RUE DE CAILLOUX, uncomfortably close to a working party of ours, but no casualties occurred. Orchard Trench was again shelled between 10 am and 12 noon. Opposite our left Coy (A) the Germans displayed two flags (colour, etc., not ascertained) for what purpose we could not guess. Right Coy continued wiring and building parapets. Left Coy continued reclaiming Orchard Trench. Seven bodies were found by the Support Coy and buried close behind Richmond Trench. A working party of 400 men from 23rd Royal Fusiliers was ordered to report to us in two reliefs of 200 each at 8 pm and 12 midnight. These parties were specially detailed for work on the Old British Line. This made a great difference to the line: about 40 yards of parapet were built up and made bullet proof. They also carried on with the building of traverses. The second relief left at 4 am. A draft of 5 other ranks arrived from England. All signallers.
