Entry | The enemy were very quiet during the night with the exception of a little high indirect machine gun fire, there was no display at all on the part of the Germans. We had at this time no machine guns with the Battalion, and emplacements were held by Lewis Guns for which purpose all men trained in this gun had been detached the day before going into the line, and came under the orders of the Brigade Machine Gun Officer. Hostile aircraft were active during the morning between the hours of 10am and 12 noon, they did not attempt to cross our lines owing to the fact that our own aircraft were also active. No fights took place. Work was carried on in all parts of the line held by the Battn. The right Coy put out about 450 feet of barbed wire and also strengthened about 70 yards of French wire by interspersing it with barbed wire. Much work was required, in all the islands and cover trench, on the parapets, these required heightening and thickening everywhere. All work had to be done at night. The pumps in this part of the line were good and worked very well. The reserve Coy continued the work of building traverses in Old British Line, here it was quite possible to work by day. Weather was cold but fine. |
