Entry | Christmas Day. No attempt was made by the Germans to create a truce, either during the night or in the morning. The enemy made no hostile demonstration beyond the usual sniping and occasional machine gun fire. The Battn was relieved by the 23rd Royal Fusiliers. Relief completed about 12 noon. During this tour in the trenches there were no casualties caused by hostile action. On relief Coys marched independently to billets vacated by the 23rd RF in ANNEQUIN FOSSE, and devoted the rest of the day to cleaning. The weather was very unsettled. The billets were not bad, and whatever their state so long as they kept the rain out the Battalion would have been glad to get into them after three such wet days. During the afternoon the enemy shelled the FOSSE and its vicinity but did little damage. A draft of 39 joined the battalion this day. |
