War Diary

1915-12-24
Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, Z2
Entry Practically every man was occupied in cleaning trenches and repairing landslides. Communications trenches were bad. WILSONS WAY which had been one of the best fell in in several places. Working parties were again supplied by the Fusiliers, but their time was fully occupied in clearing landslides. The front line had a good deal of water in places, pumps were set to work and certain progress made. The worst feature after the mud in this subsection was the width of the trenches. Proper care had not been taken in laying the sandbags as headers and stretchers at the time they were built, with the result that when the bad weather arrived the top sandbags pushed the lower ones down do that a bulge was caused both in the parapet and parados, thereby making traffic, especially reliefs with the men fully equipped, extremely awkward. Enemy was very quiet except for a few minenwerfers about BOYAU 16 and an occasional rifle grenade, neither of which did any damage. Strict orders were issued against fraternising with the enemy on Christmas Day, men were warned they would be tried by FGCM for any attempt on their part to constitute a truce, and orders were given that Germans showing themselves would be fired on. During the day our heavy and other artillery bombarded heavily AUCHY LEZ LA BASSEE and the German front and second line with reported good results. The Regt on our left was the 1st KRR Corps.
