Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, BEUVRY
Entry The Battn relieved the 23rd Royal Fusiliers in Z2 Subsection. Relief was completed about 11 am. The Battn frontage extended from BOYAU 14 to GUN ST as before. The trenches were in bad condition owing to the rain. Work on the front line and communication trenches was begun straight away, and certain progress made but owing to the extent of the front and the depleted numbers of the battalion, it was not possible to do more than clear away the worst. The centre Coy C commenced to sap out to a new crater 12 yards to the left of 19 BOYAU and about 20 yards from our front line, the crater was unoccupied by either side. Our object was to construct a T on completion of the sap and occupy as a fire trench. The reserve Coy and the Hqrs were in WIMPOLE ST which was under water for a depth of six inches but as the floor of the trench was bricked, pumps soon cleared away the water. The Germans were quiet during the afternoon and night. Capt E S Methven took over duties of Adj during Capt Frizzell's absence on leave. Captain CW Frizzell granted leave to England.
