Entry | Enemy infantry quiet on our front. Believed to be SAXONS - no confirmation. The work of clearing and repairing fire and communication trenches continued. The arrangement with our artillery was the same as we had in A2 last August with regard to minenwerfers. Directly enemy trench mortars sent over shells the company commander telephoned the work "Minnie". This went through to the 56th Howitzer battery and 9th and 70th RFA. All three replied at once. Any further particulars as to direction followed. If the enemy sent the very big trench mortar shell - 200 lbs - the 56th Battery were asked to report to the "heavies" when the 81st Siege would reply too. This was done through the battalion. Fatigues as yesterday for the RE. The GOC 6th Brigade decided to rebuild the right Coy front trench from the La BASSEE Rd to GUN St. Trench divided into three sectors, responsibility for us of the centre piece 80 yds in length. Only a start could be made with this scheme as all available men were busy keeping the trenches in repair. At 3.30pm enemy shelled Oxford St and Conduit St with field HE shells. 15 sent, no material damage. |
