Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, VERMELLES
Entry 8.30 am. Major Bird and Capt Fullbrook-Leggatt were sent for from the VII Division to the HQ dugout in the railway. The brigade were to attack the "Quarries" between the Hulloch Road and FOSSE No. 8. We were to pass through the 2nd Worcesters - who with the 1st KRR were already in the first line trenches - and attack the "Quarries" with the 1st KRR on our left and 2nd Worcesters in support. We advanced over the open from the original British lines. A Coy on the left B on the right with D and C in support. 4.30pm Attack countermanded as the enemy had succeeded in driving us from FOSSE 8. Withdrew to old British trench. Large working party found for consolidating the position then held. [margin note] Smoke helmets worn before we reached railway. Many caps lost.
