War Diary

1918-01-24
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location Italy, [S Croce Bigolina]
Entry The BRIGADE moved to the S GEORGIO DI BOSCO Area. We moved to PAVIOLA leaving at 9am, all in billets by 1.15pm, route via FONTANIVA - BARINA - S GEORGIO IN BRENTA - S GEORGIO DI BOSCO. It was a bad day for marching as the roads were in a very bad condition after the thaw, in many cases the wheeled traffic had cut right through the crown of the road. We were all extremely sorry to leave S. CROCE BIGOLINA as during the six weeks we had been there we were very comfortable and the inhabitants were most friendly to us, and they seemed very sorry when we left. The PARISH PRIEST gave the Commanding Officer a special message, thanking him for the behaviour of the Battalion , speaking most warmly of their kindness to the inhabitants; of the cordial relations that existed, and especially he wished to mention the honour of the men between the women and girls of the district - a very gratifying message for any Commanding Officer to receive. The billets in PAVIOLA were fairly comfortable. Weather:- a misty morning, clearing about mid-day.
