Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location Italy, [S Croce Bigolina]
Entry The CORPS COMMANDER inspected the Battalion in the afternoon. The weather was so snowy that the inspection could not be held out of doors. It was held by half Companies under the archway of one of "C" Company billets. The CORPS COMMANDER spoke to as many men as time allowed, especially to those who had been wounded, had won a medal, or looked particularly unhappy, and by his good humour and geniality, cheered everyone. The Battalion Laundry was started, the Stretcher Bearers of each Company doing their Company washing. No Drying Room was available, the amount of work done depending largely on the weather. Copies of a letter written by an Italian soldier, who had lived for a long period in England, were received and circulated to Companies. (copy attached) The following telegrams were published in Battalion Orders for the information of all ranks:- From LORD MAYOR, LONDON to GENERAL SIR HERBERT PLUMER 31.12.17 "The citizens of LONDON beg you to accept personally and convey to your gallant forces their profound appreciation of their services and sacrifices and their best wishes and prayers that the righteous aims of Great Britain and her Allies may be triumphantly realised during the year" To LORD MAYOR LONDON from GENERAL HERBERT PLUMER. 1.1.18 "All ranks of the British Forces in Italy join with me in thanking you and the citizens of LONDON for you rkind telegram which is much appreciated. The determination of all remains steadfast to continue fighting until permanent peace is assured by the victory of the Allied arms" Weather:- snowy day, very cold night. Remarks CAPT G C W GREGORY appointed Area Commandant of MARSAN District. 2 OR to Hospital sick. Letter attached marked "A3"
