Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location Italy, [Albetonne]
Entry We moved to ALBETONNE, leaving at 11.45am, arriving 2.15pm. A good road for marching but slippery after the frost. The extra blanket was very trying for all ranks, especially after 7 days in the train. All HQ and B Coy were billeted in the Chateau Stables, etc: C coy in a large Barn in the village. Most luxurious Chateau (Negri di Salvi) belonging to an Italian Colonel who was killed in the August fighting. It was the finest Chateau any of us had been in since we landed in France. Too comfortable for us to stay long in. Weather;- a fine day cold early part of the night. [Second train] We left ISSOLO RIZZO at 10am, marching to BONAVIGO, which was reached at 12.30pm. The accommodation here was somewhat scarce, HQ in open loft in rear of the local doctors house. "A" in empty house, "D" in various barns of a farmhouse. The usual inspections of feet and rifles were held during the afternoon. Weather:- clear, cold morning, cloudy afternoon and evening. The arrangements for the journey on the whole were excellent, although the long halt of 4 hours each day, which had been promised us, could not be given owing to the congestion of the trains, and uncertainty of the time table, yet at least twice every day, hot tea or coffee was issued to the men. Ten days rations were taken on each train, and taking everything into consideration it was a good journey. On the marches, where civilian transport could not be hired, the GS Wagons were sent back for the blankets, as no lorries were available.
