Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, [Train]
Entry Arrived PONT AVIGNON 2am - 12 hours late. Thence to MIRAMAS. Halt for 1 hour was made. Hot coffee was issued: horses were watered etc. Arrived at 5am left at 6am. Thence via MARSEILLE (halt 9.15 - 11.15am) and TOULON. Halted here from 4.45pm to 5.15pm. Here French Red Cross Ladies came with tea, flowers etc. Our progress after MARSEILLE was almost triumphant, through cheering and waving crowds and small groups dotted all along the Line. There had been an accident just outside TOULON - 3 or 4 trucks derailed - which upset all the time table. It was a slow journey. Weather:- a lovely sunny day, cold night. [Second train, into Italy] Everyone was awake early, for to most of the men the sight of snow-capped mountains was a revelation. We passed several batteries of French Artillery who greeted us cordially. BUSSELENO was reached at 9am, where the train halted and hot tea and rations issued to the men. The scenery was magnificent, and the air resonant with the chiming of church bells (Sunday) TURIN was reached at noon, where we received a more than cordial welcome. Italian ladies met us on the station and provided us with chocolate, cigarettes, matches, small Italian silk flags etc. Crowds lined the embankments and cheered us until the train once more reached the country. We arrived at MONTARRO at 5pm where we halted until 8pm - during which interval tea was made and issued, horses water etc. Weather:- a lovely day, very cold at night.
