Entry | 7.30am. GOC went round trenches with CO. A very fine day. A good deal of work carried out cleaning, repairing and reconstructing trenches. Hostile minenwerfer were very active against our right company between 12 mn and 12.30 am. We sent the word "minnie" to 50th and 56th batteries who retaliated. Except for this enemy were very quiet during the night. 4.30 am. Enemy seen repairing damage to their front trench, caused by our artillery fire, we opened fire and the work ceased. 4.35 am. D Coy opened fire on a few enemy seen crossing main LA BASSEE - BETHUNE road, near their second line, they disappeared. 6.45 am. A drum and 3 or 4 bugles were heard practicing near HAISNES. The enemy blows a horn to notify approach of one of our trench mortar bombs. 10.00 am. A helio was seen near LA BASSEE church. A pamphlet was received notifying us that the country for 3 miles to our front was flat and intersected by dykes 3 or 4 feet across. The wood just NE of BAUVIN consisted of low trees or shrubs, and that all the approaches to LA BASSEE were believed to be mined. This information was obtained from civilians last October. 6.00 pm. Snipers were very active against our right company to 8 pm. Enfilade fire from right. A normal amount of transport was heard between LA BASSEE and HAISNES during the night. Enemy fired a green light at 8 pm from their front line, nothing followed. We observed many trench mortar positions. |
