Regiment | 1/4th Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, Dambre Farm Camp |
Entry | B.27.c.94Sheet NW The Brigade relieved the 118th Brigade. We took over the Left Reserve positions, from the 17th Notts & Derbys and 16th Rifle Brigade.(117th Brigade attached 118th Brigade.) We left at 2.30pm. by platoons - five minutes interval. Relief completed 7.30pm. A tiring march owing to the weather and the bad going. The enemy had evidently seen the relief for they shelled continuously all the afternoon and night, chiefly heavy stuff. Dispositions:- A Coy, OG2: B, C and D Coy OG1. (see map attached) Accommodation was scattered: there were a few concrete shelters, each holding 4 men, and rough shelters put over the trenches. The Lines had been badly knocked about and all the ground was a mass of shell holes. The enemy had solved the difficulty of making dug-outs in the wet soil by building reinforced concrete capable of keeping out anything but the very heavy shells: many of these were full of water and the trenches were in a very bad condition. The shelling was incessant all night and very little sleep was possible. Weather:- a close muggy day, very hot later. |
