Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, [Flamicourt]
Entry Our left Company took over BRUSLE from the BUCKS Battalion. Our Outpost line was re-arranged, CARTIGNY being the southern boundary of the DIVISION. We handed over our right to the 177 Brigade, the relief being completed by 2pm. "A" Company relieved part of "B" company and the BUCKS in BRUSLE. Dispositions as follows:- 1 Platoon finding the picquet in CARTIGNY, and one in support, and one platoon finding the picquet in BRUSLE and one in support. One Platoon of "C" Company moved to O.G.3 in P.1.a - part of the main defence line. LE MESNIL was handed over to the 177 Brigade. After relief HQ "B", "C" and "D" companies moved to FLAMICOURT being billeted in the remains of the houses there. The more one could see of the town, the more one realised the wanton and thorough destruction carried out by the enemy. Apparently he left rather earlier than he expected to as outside most of the houses in this part were heaps of zinc and tin ready to be carried away, and in one house there was a large heap of odd strips of copper, taken off our shells. The inhabitants of the local villages in front were being gradually brought in, and they presented a piteous spectacle. Their faces showed what misery and unhappiness they had been living in. The enemy appear to have carried out a system of transferring the inhabitants from their own village to another and when TINCOURT was evacuated a column of civilians was halted on the rise behind the village and made to witness the destruction of the houses there. All life and hope seems to have left their faces and they clearly showed what treatments they had been receiving from the enemy. Weather:- a lovely day, cold wind.
