War Diary

1917-03-20
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, [Peronne]
Entry The Battalion moved to PERONNE leaving at 11am. arriving at 3pm. Moving via HERBECOURT - BIACHES - BEZANCOURT FARM - HALLE - QUINCOIRE Cross Roads. The roads were in excellent condition and showed no signs of shelling except through BIACHES. The River SOMME had been bridged at BEZANCOURT FARM. All buildings in PERONNE had been destroyed and rendered as far as possible uninhabitable. Very little damage had been done by shell fire, the GERMANS had laid themselves out to destroy the town and render it useless for military or ordinary occupation to the very best of their ability: a more organised system of destruction was hardly possible, and in addition to destroying the buildings there was much evidence of wanton destruction such as fruit trees, furniture, children's toys, and any article that seems to have caught their eye. The Battalion was billeted in what was left of the BARRACKS, the BUCKS Battalion coming in just after us in the afternoon, and the rest of the Brigade followed in the evening and night. Weather:- a fine day cold wind.
