Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Citerne
Entry The Brigade moved to the HAMEL area by train, the first train leaving AIRAINES taking the GLOSTERS, ourselves, MACHINE GUN COMPANY, and TRENCH MORTAR BATTERY; the second from OISEMONT taking BRIGADE HQ, BUCKS and OXFORDS. We left CITERNE at 5am. Arriving at AIRAINES soon after 7am. The roads were good going except in a few places. We were all sorry to leave the village as we had been very comfortable there, and the inhabitants during our stay had been most friendly. Blankets etc were sent to the Station on lorries, the Company Cooks going with them, and having tea ready on our arrival. We left AIRAINES about 9.30am. travelling via AMIENS and VILLERS BRETTONEAUX. We arrived at CERISY at 2.15pm., after a good journey considering the congested state of the railways, but it was very cold. We marched to HAMEL, a distance of about 3 miles, arriving at 3.30pm. The camp we took over had been used by the French, until 8 days ago, and consisted of ADRIAN huts, each hut holding about 100 men. Weather:- a very cold day, hard frost at night. Report A Reinforcement of 8 joined the Battalion for duty.
