Entry | CO's orders in billets. Captain Frizzell and a party of 20 men went into BETHUNE at 8am to bid "Godspeed" to the 4th Guards Brigade, who are leaving the 2nd Division to join the new Guards Division. Their loss is irreparable. 2/Lt Ward proceeded on leave to England. 2.50pm CUINCHY. We relieved 2nd Battn South Staffordshire Regiment in former line. B Company on the right, A Company in the centre, C Company on left, D Company in support. Our front line and anti-aircraft machine gun opened fire on a German aeroplane an AVIATIK at 7.15pm, and drove it towards LA BASSEE. A Coy fired on a German working party at 8.30pm, foul language was hurled at us, but groans were loud. A patrol went along the railway embankment S of the LA BASSEE Canal at 11.15pm, the enemy were singing to a piano N of the Canal. During the night enemy opened bursts of machine gun fire on our parapet. 2/Lt Clifford Smith Cmdng B Coy went out along a front sap without properly warning his sentries who opened fire and threw four bombs. One of the latter severely wounded 2/Lt Clifford Smith, and his orderly was shot through the heart (Pte Blackhall) Casualties 2 killed 2 wounded. (one by a falling bullet fired at an aeroplane) Lieut Eagar took command of B Coy. |
