Regiment 1st Royal Berkshire
Location France, CUINCHY SECTION A2
Entry A quiet day. Work on trenches continued and three new saps started by C Company on left with a view to having jumping off places in case of attack. We fired 44 rounds from our trench mortars during the day, the enemy did not reply much. A German aeroplane, an AVIATIK flew along our line from the left, we opened rapid fire and with the aid of the anti aircraft guns the aeroplane turned and flew back quickly towards LA BASSEE. A Zeppelin was reported going towards POPERINGHE at 6.30pm. The GOC went round the right and centre companies at 8am. The Bde Major was slightly wounded by a piece of metal knocked off a periscope by a sniper. The sniper was shot by us at 7pm. Col Robinson 1st Divisional Staff brought two civilians round our line at 2.30pm. They did not seem over brave, and only wanted a "souvenir". Two casualties.
