Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, [Martinpuich]
Entry The Commanding Officer went to BRIGADE HQ at 5.30p.m. to meet the Divisional General, and received instructions from the Brigadier, re making an attack on the BUTTE and QUARRY as soon as possible. The day selected was the early morning of the 18th, but the attack was chiefly to depend on a successful attack being made by the 50th DIVISION on the HOOK. The Battalion relieved the GLOSTERS, the relief being completed by midnight. Two days rations were taken up by all ranks. Four patrols under 2/Lts CAWLEY, PARSONS, LARN and SUTTON went out to reconnoitre the ground between the right front Company and the BUTTE. It was the Commanding Officer's idea to attack North East from the R front line Company, with the left flank on the main road, and the right flank to the south of the BUTTE. The Commanding Officer spent two hours with the right Company studying the position, and the ground etc. The trenches were in bad condition owing to the weather, but as they all were overlooked by the BUTTE, they were under continual shell fire night and day. There were no shelters or dugouts for either of the two front Companies, all the posts having to remain in the trenches. Dispositions:- A right front Company, C left front Company, B in support. D in reserve. (See Map) BHQ 26th AVENUE.) Weather:- a fine day, very cold night, frost and east wind.
