Entry | A fairly quiet day. What appeared to be Aerial Torpedoes exploded behind our front line in the morning. Work continued on new communications trench, repairing saps, wiring front and second line and scraping [sic] communications trenches. Enemy phizz-banged our trenches in the morning and evening, one piece of shell was visible 20 yards away at night and when picked up smelt of phosphorous. A German sniper was observed by D Coy with a peaked cap, with a gold band and badge. We had an artillery test at 9.30am, the message being sent from the front line direct to battery. A Zeppelin was reported near LA BASSEE at 7.30pm. Enemy bombed one of our saps and we retaliated. Enemy exploded a mine about 11pm, killing the mining officer 2/Lt Lacey, a splendid fellow, and 3 others. A Company relieved D Coy in the centre section at 1pm. 2/Lt Stokes returned from St VENANT and took over three 95mm trench mortar batteries of 4 guns each. Lieut GGN Getting was promoted temporary Captain. 2/Lt Turner looked over the parapet about 10am to throw a bomb at the Bosch, and as he was about to get down received a scalp wound from a sniper. Three casualties. |
