Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Ovillers
Entry We left bivouacs at 5.30a.m. marched by the "P" road to OVILLERS, arriving at our dug-outs in the trenches about 7.45a.m. The relief was rather unsatisfactory as Six Companies were to take over where five Coys had been, but as each or our Coys was about 150 strong and the other coys 100, the dug-outs etc were far too crowded. After referring the question to our Brigade, the two BUCKS Companies rejoined their Battlion, and the dug-out accommodation was then sufficient for this Battalion. We took over from the 5th BERKS, 7th NORFOLKS, and 9th ESSEX. During the day all bombs etc were collected, one Battalion dump and four small Company dumps being made. Their guns were very active all day and night. Weather:- a very hot day. Remarks 2/Lt Cooke went to Hospital. Lt Bayley-Butler went on leave: Capt Buchanan, RAMC came in his place
