Entry | The Brigade left BEAUVAL at 8.0a.m. We, with the 5th GLOSTERS, marched to CRAMONT via BEAUQUESNE. A very hot march and most trying althrough the heat of the day. We arrived at 1.45p.m. having had two half-hour halts on the way. 125 men fell out, 96 of them being Drafts. Some of these men should not have been sent out: they had not handled a rifle before, only broomsticks; they had not been taught to turn and had no knowledge of a bomb: many of the elementary points on sanitation were unknown. These remarks refer to only a few. The Corps Commander, General MORLAND, met us and congratulated the Commaning Officer on the excellent way in which the Battlion had fought. The GOC Division inspected the Battalion on the march. CRAMONT is a very pretty village and all the billets were clean. The peacefulness was most restful after what the Battalion had passed through. Weather:- a very hot day. |
