War Diary

1916-07-21
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, La Boisselle
Entry Supports of the front Coy were moved to 82 trench. A relieved C Company, C moving to bivouacs. A very busy day clearing the trenches, carrying Bombs forward and generally improving our position. Their guns were firing practically all day, chiefly 15c and 21c. A party of 150 OXFORDS came up at night to help clear the trenches but owing to the heavy fire very little work was possible, gas shells again being used frequently. A patrol under command of Lieut Down, went out from our Right trench to reconnoitre the SW Corner of POZIERES. They returned with most valuable information, though owing to the MG fire and the number of flares the enemy kept sending up all night the difficulties and dangers of their work were increased. Their information was of great use to the Anzacs when they attacked. Weather:- a fine day. Remarks Reinforcements of 102 joined the Battn. Casualties:- 1 Killed, 17 Wounded.
