During our absence the village had acquired a very unhealthy reputation but during our tour there was not, at any time, as much shelling as we had a often experienced in days gone by. The trenches were in a very bad condition, full of water and mud, and very few pumps were available: the water in many places was waist deep. Enemy's guns were active all the day, chiefly 77s and 15s. Weather:- a showery day.
