Entry We received orders at 9.0a.m. re the attack for the following morning. The Commanding Officer went over with the Brigadier to try and get some idea of the ground, but observation was practically impossible. Further orders were issued about 5.30p.m. The Brigade less the BUCKS Battalion, moved off at 7.0p.m. to MESNIL, arriving about 9.0p.m. The Commanding Officers went forward to look at the trenches and arrange all details. The following was the order of attack:- Two Battalions to attack - ROYAL BERKS on the Right; GLOSTERS on the Left; OXFORDS Brigade Reserve; BUCKS Divisional Reserve. Orders for the Battalion - copy attached. "A" Company moved off from MESIL at 10.30p.m., the other companies following at a quarter of an hours interval. Just as "A" Company were moving into the trenches orders were received to cancel the Divisional Operations. We returned to our bivouacs at MAILLY-MAILLET about 3.0a.m. (3/7/16), the Battalion being greatly disappointed. They had moved out from their bivouacs in grreat spirits, feeling that at last the time for attack had come after all the many months of trench life.
