Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Beauval
Entry The Brigade left BEAUVAL, marching to the ST RIQUIER Training area. We moved off at 4.0a.m. arriving at MAISON-ROLANDE at 11.15a.m. The Brigade halted for breakfast for 1 1/4 hours after passing FIENVILLERS. It was an excellent day for marching - a light breeze with not too much sun. The "going" was good, main roads being used until the last 1 1/2 miles. Only two men fell out in the Battalion. MAISON-ROLANDE is a small village, but the billets were comfortable. We met with some distinct hostility from the inhabitants owing to the behaviour of other troops who had been billeted there before us. The Commanding Officer warned the Battalion of this feeling and every care was taken to create a good impression. (The Battalion was very successful in doing this work and any bad impression that may have existed before the Battalion came to this village was entirely oblitereated before we left.) Weather:- a lovely day. [Signed ] R F Clarke Lt Col Comdg 4th Bn Royal Berks Regt.
