Entry | The battalion left bivouacs at 7.0a.m. and joined the Brigade at ST LEGER to march to BEAUVAL. At MARIEUX the Brigade marched past and were inspected by the Corps Commander, General Hunter-Weston. To the Commanding Officer he expressed his pleasure and satisfaction for the way they marched past. He said he had heard what a good fight they had put up on the night of the 15/16th, and has asked the Commanding Officer to tell them how pleased he was to receive the report. The Battalion arrived at BEAUVAL about noon. It was a very hot and trying march the last three miles was in the valley with a following wind. 85 men fell out but this large number can be chiefly accounted for by the lack of sleep the Battalion had had the last two nights, the bombardment they had been through and the hot sun on the steel helmets, - the Battalion had done no marching in these. The Billets in BEAUVAL were very good - the area allotted to the Battalion was No 1. It seemed quite strange to all of us to be in a town again after ten months of trench life. This length of time is a record for any Division out here. Two more of our men were buried by the 8th WORCESTERS. Weather:- a very hot day. |
