Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties, Pioneers only, on Communication Trenches. Enemy's guns were fairly active all the morning and their Machine Guns all the afternoon and evening. A new trench was dug by the Brigade from 9.30p.m. to 3.0a.m. on the 10th. 1500 men were out, including the digging, wiring and covering parties. The 5th GLOSTERS and 4th OXFORDS found digging and wiring parties; BUCKS and ourselves the covering parties. Major Clissold, REs. was in command of the operations. The trench started from the North end of BOUILLON 400 yards due north, 200 yards North-North East, 150 yards North-North West, 200 yards due West joining in the old line a HOCHE. A barricade on the PUISIEUX ROAD was erected consisting of 2000 sand bags. Knife Rests were put out out roughly 40 yards in front of the new trench, 2 yards apart: these spaces being joined up by screw stakes and barbed wire. Copy enclosed. There were only 15 casualties out of all the parties out. All the arrangements worked excellently. Weather: a fine day, cloudy night. Remarks Battalion Operation Order and poem by Lieut Down attached.
