Location | France, Hebuterne |
Entry | A Company relieved B Company by 9.0p.m. All working parties were again employed in dealing with the water in the trenches. Enemy's guns put a few shells in our front line and reserve lines and in the afternoon about a dozen "minnies" fell on our Right trench. Weather:- a fine day, with some rain at night. One of German aeroplanes dropped two bombs near the Battalion Reserve Line. During the month of February the 4th OXFORDS were on our Left, and the 5th GLOSTERS on our right, excepting for the past two days when the 5th GLOSTERS were on our LEFT and the WEST RIDINGS, one of the Battalions in the 12th Brigade, were on our Right. [Signed ] R J Clarke Major, Comdg 4th Bn Royal Berks Regt. Remarks Capt J A Simonds left the Bn to rejoin his Regt. The month he had been attached to us was full of incidents, heavy shelling, bad weather, and plenty of work. Although a Senior Capt yet he had taken the duties of Platoon Commander, taking his share with the Subaltern of the Coy. Nothing could alter his cheerfulness and he proved a tower of strength to the Coy Commander and all with whom he was brought into contact. |
