Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Courcelles
Entry We relieved the BUCKS Battalion, taking over from them the new "G" Section of the line. It is held by three companies, Right, Centre and Left. A and C Coys hold the right alternately, "C" the Centre, D the Left. B and C Companies completed their relief by 11.0a.m., D by 2p.m., A by 8p.m. This section is most extensive. The distance from the Reserve Platoons to the Front Line is 1500 yards, straight across country. The ground in between is full of disused trenches, French and German, and it is a most difficult Section to hold. Parts of the fire trench are impassable and with our present weak numbers work is extremely hard. Enemy guns put about 60 shells on our Front Line in the morning, about a dozen at mid-day, and about two dozen in the early afternoon. Weather:- a fine day.
