1915-11-14
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry "B" & "D" Companies relieved "A" & "C" Coys 8.0a.m. "A" Coy to the KEEP, "C" Coy to the CHATEAU. The MG's straffe commenced 7.0a.am., 5 to 10 rounds being fired at least every five minutes, day and night, by various guns in the Brigade, on different points in the enemy's lines, selected by the MG Officers. In answer to our bombardment the enemy fired about 12 shells on BATAILLE, JENA and MORAND. Three 4.2 shells fell in POWIATOWSKI in the afternoon - all "duds". A considerable amount of transport was heard near LES ESSARTS, proceeding north about 5.15p.m. A large working party was heard near FERME SANS NOM from 5.30 to 9.0p.m. A patrol (Lieut Cruttwell, Sergt Daniels, Corporal Taylor, Pte Gibbs) went out 5.15p.m. to report on the snipers posts, supposed to have been dug near the two trees on the BUCQUOY ROAD: only small holes, apparently scratched by animals, were found; the patrol returned 6.15p.m. A fine day which enabled a lot of work to be done on the trenches. A very cold night with a hard frost.
