War Diary

1915-11-02
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry "A" Company RIF left the trenches 6.0a.m., moving to SAILLY for baths, thence to COUIN. During the time they were attached to us for instruction they proved most anxious and willing to learn all we could teach them. We were sorry when they left. "B" and "D" Companies relieved "A" and "C" at 3.0p.m. The heavy rain made the trenches in a wretched condition, the sides falling blocked the water, and in may cases the trenches were impassable. The two Companies worked extremely well and by the early morning most of the damage had been dealt with. Lieut Hughes was buried in his dug-out, but fortunately no damage was done. Weather:- wet day and night, very heavy rain. The rate of Exchange for November was fixed at 3/8d for 5 francs. Remarks Col O P Serocold to Bde to take Command while the Brigadier is on Leave. Major Clarke take Command of the Battalion. Capt Thorne returned from Hospital.
