Regiment | 1/4th Royal Berkshire |

Location | France, Hebuterne |
Entry | Working parties morning only as on the 16th. The RIR moved back to COUIN, leaving at 6.0a.m. onwards. We were all sorry to lose them, they were good companions and most willing to learn all we could teach them. B and D Companies relieved A and C Coys, "A" moving to the KEEP, "C" to the CHATEAU. The enemy's working parties were busy all along their line from 6.30a.m. to 8.30a.m., and again at night. Their habit of dropping bombs outside their line seems to be growing, about a dozen falling from 6.30 to 8.30a.m. The guns on both sides were busy most of the day; we began the straffe and the enemy replied with Field Guns and Howitzers on SAILLY and HEBUTERNE, about 12.15p.m. and again about 1.30p.m. - at the latter time more violently - about 250 shells falling in the two villages. The enemy's Batteries were firing from SERRE, PUISIEUX, LOUVIERE, BOIS DE BEIZ, South end of LABRAYELLE and ROSSIGNOL, especially the latter. A fine but misty day |
