Regiment | 1/4th Royal Berkshire |
---|---|
Location | France, Hebuterne |
Entry | Working parties as on the 13th. At 6.0a.m. a patrol (Lieut Cruttwell, Cpl Haines, and Pte Painting) went out form NIEL under cover of the mist. The German wire was reached at a point South of K.11.C.78 it is about 80yards deep the centre being old and rusty, but the outer edge is being strengthened with new stakes and wire. Near this point there is a hollow where there are a small shelter and two large beehive erections ? MG emplacements. The patrol returned at 7.0a.m. The enemy fired 6 shells on MORAND about 12.30p.m. A Patrol under Lieut Cruttwell, of 2/Lieut Adamson, 1 Sergeant RI Rifles, Sergt Daniels, Corporal Taylor, Privates Mills, Gibbs, Dutton and Knapp, went out from JENA sap at 9.30p.m. They proceeded North with the BUCQUOY Road to the enemy's trenches, about 400 yards, then moved parallel: they ran into a dense bank of fog: after proceedeing about 100 yards further they were challenged - Rifle and Revolver fire immediately followed. The patrol laid down and returned the fire, which appeared to come from about 5 men and another seven men close by about 20 yards away. The bombers of the patrol threw 4 bombs - two at each party. Rapid fire was also opened on them from the enemy's trenches, right and left: the patrol then retired about 30 yards to a small hollow and reformed, Pte Knapp being missing. The patrol returned at 10.45p.m. to the sap they started from, Pte Knapp coming in about 6.0a.m. having lost his bearings and waited for daylight to get his bearings. The patrol was lucky to return without casualties, and Lieut Cruttwell showed great skill in the handling of it. A fine day, misty early morning and night. |
