War Diary

1915-09-27
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties as usual. Two platoons of "D"Coy from the KEEP relieved the two platoons of 5th SUSSEX at 7.45a.m. The enemy opened heavy MG and rifle fire at the morning "stand to", clearly proving their line was strongly held. Their 4.2 Field Guns fired a few shells in the afternoon at GUDIN and the outskirts of the village just behind. Our guns did not fire all day. At evening "stand to" the enemy in front of BATAILLE and HOCHE began shouting " Come on Gloucesters, Come on Berks," a megaphone being used for the purpose. Immediately afterwards they opened rapid fire and bombs were thrown. The CO and 2nd in Command 4th GLOSTERS came up re taking over on the 29th. A fine day but cooler.
