War Diary

1915-09-21
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties from D as on the 20th. 6 Shrapnel shells fell on trench GUDIN about 9.30a.m. At3.0 and 3.30p.m. our guns opened fire in the villages and roads behind the enemy's lines - short but very fierce each time. The enemy replied with 4 shells in the village, but about 6 o'clock they replied with nearly as many as we had sent them, HEBUTERNE and SAILLY getting them all. One shell fell in the courtyard of Battn HQ. A patrol under Lieut Goolden (Serg Hedges, L/c Burton & 4 men) went out about 7p.m. from trench MORAND to the point where they saw the Germans on the previous patrol: they remained there till 9.45p.m. but saw no signs of the enemy. A lovely day. Our guns again opened fire about 11.30p.m. Enemy's transport was heard in the direction BUCQUOY about 9.0p.m.
