War Diary

1915-09-04
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties morning only as on the 3rd. D Company and the two platoons of B Coy relieved the 11th WARWICKS, the move being completed by 6.30p.m. - Capt LLOYD expressed on behalf of himself, Officers, and all ranks of his Company their thanks for all the kindness they had received during their tour of instruction. The weather had not been kind in this time, but everything that was possible had been done for them. The enemy's guns were quieter all day. Heavy transport was heard in the early morning as if moving away from SERRE. A fine day. Capt PORTER (Secretary of the County Association) joined us mid-day for the purpose of spending a few hours with the Battalion and seeing for himself as much as possible of trench life in this time. - he was only out from England for 4 days; he went round the trenches by day and night and slept in a dug-out. The real reason of his visit was to enable him to give the people at home "first hand" information as to Trench life out here. This information would be particularly useful to him at Recruiting Meetings. Remarks Capt SHARPE & Capt THORNE returned from leave.
