War Diary

1915-09-03
Regiment 1/4th Royal Berkshire
Location France, Hebuterne
Entry Working parties as on the 2nd, 2 platoons of B and D Companies taking the place of the 11th WARWICKS. The officers Commanding the 144th Brigade, 4th & 5th GLOSTERS and 8th WORCESTERS came up in the morning re taking over from us under the new arrangements, when all details were discussed. The enemy's guns were fairly active in the morning and early afternoon at the back of HOCHE and PAS DE TIR from the direction of PUISIEUX. Their snipers were more active than usual in front of HOCHE. A showery day with heavy rain at night. This was one of the darkest nights we have experienced and work was impossible in the trenches. The enemy put over trench mortar bombs late in the evening on the trenches well away to our left. Our M Guns opened fire all down the line opposite them, and the French Batteries in rear put in 48 shells quick firing. This latter firing was almost their "farewell" as they were moving back the mext day.
